Advisory services and material analysis

We analyse and understand building materials

We investigate the structural stability of buildings and objects to identify areas of decay and failure. Using our in-house laboratory, we further examine materials and carry out mortar analysis. Our comprehensive Condition Reports record findings and detail the appropriate conservation treatment.

Analysis of Decay

We undertake environmental monitoring to help understand decay mechanisms and then provide pragmatic solutions to ameliorate conditions where possible. This work is combined with research into historical records and backed up by a wealth of knowledge based on many years of experience.

A full and detailed analysis is given of the decay mechanisms affecting buildings, monuments, statuary and any other object or structure that we are commissioned to investigate.

Building Surveys

Our methodical assessments of existing conditions are supported by extensive recording of observed conditions, material defects, mechanisms of decay, environmental exposure and historical records.

Consultancy

We conduct detailed surveys, prepare schedules of work, supervise and oversee long-term projects.

Our team of qualified professionals provide training and deliver continued professional development sessions and presentations.

Specifications

Based on comprehensive surveys and analysis, we provide specifications for work on a wide range of projects. Trials are undertaken to determine methods and best practice.

We produce documentation for the cleaning, consolidation, stabilisation and redecoration of diverse objects and buildings.

Mortars

Using our in-house laboratory facilities, we determine appropriate replacement materials to match strength, porosity, texture and colour of existing fabrics. We also assist in identifying stone and aggregates, locating quarries to provide suitable replacements.

Winter Covers

We have developed a winter cover system which protects sculptures and decorative stonework from damage caused by freezing and wet conditions.

Our bespoke winter covers consist of a three layered moisture impermeable system which is windproof, waterproof, insulating and provides UV protection.
