Conservator (Somerset Workshop)

Reporting to: Senior Conservator/Project Manager/Section Manager
Key Relationships: Conservators, Section Head, Sub-contractors
Job Profile: Conservation Projects, Communication, Client Facing
Location: Ammerdown Workshop, Somerset & sites as directed
Hours: 39 hours. 8.30 am until 5 pm Mon – Thurs 6 (4 pm Fri). Overtime by agreement.

Purpose of position

  • Undertake practical conservation to a high standard, working as part of a team; dependent on skills and experience moving towards leading projects or taking the lead.
  • Ensure all conservation work is carried out on time and to budget and to the highest standards to ensure an excellent client service.
  • Assist in the management of your project or projects, acting as site contact for the client, Section Head, sub-contractors or Senior Conservator.

Key Responsibilities:

Undertake practical conservation; keep accurate records, photographic, written and drawn before during and after the works.

Works will be undertaken across a varied portfolio of projects from architectural stone conservation through objects conservation, plaster conservation and the conservation of the decorative arts. Work will be based either in the workshop or on site; project location will determine whether time will be spent away from home. Assist in ensuring that the workshop and sites are maintained in a clean and tidy manner and that equipment is maintained and operated properly. Ensure workspaces are maintained in a safe and effective manner and maintain safety, health and welfare at the workplace. Maintain a high level of workmanship at all times. Maintain an understanding of current conservation techniques and research, and participate in professional training and development as appropriate.

Conservation Projects

  • Prepare reports, undertake surveys and assist with pricing, specification and treatment advice within the agreed time scales and to the highest standards, using the agreed templates and formats, as appropriate and agreed with line manager.
  • Undertake practical conservation to the highest standards and utilising the knowledge and advice across the company, ensuring excellent client service.
  • Act as Project Manager to small scale projects or a set of tasks within a larger scale project in relation to your own training, experience and qualifications, both at the workshop and on site.
  • Contribute to the pre-planning of projects using the agreed templates for project set-up, planning and monitoring, all in accordance with Cliveden Conservation procedures.
  • Assist with practical site set-up, ensuring prompt arrival of all materials and work force communicating any issues or changes to line manager or senior project conservator.

Client facing:

  • Assist the Section Head or Senior Conservator with projects by representing Cliveden Conservation at pre-planning meetings and site visits when required, ensuring excellent client service.
  • Ensure in all dealings with clients that the reputation of the company is enhanced and maintained through the highest standards of professional conduct. Maintain confidentiality across the company and within the scope of client-facing communications.

Team Cohesion

  • Act as part of a team by contributing to discussion and planning with professionalism and objectivity.
  • Take an active part in meetings and induction/tool talks.
  • Make others aware of issues or changes to a work or project programme and contribute to problem-solving by acting in the best interests of Cliveden Conservation at all times.

Further details

  • Travel to UK sites & locations, as directed a proportion of the conservation portfolio will necessitate overnight stays.
  • Full UK driving licence preferred, or demonstration of active efforts to qualify.
  • Carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the role as requested by line manager.

Houghton Workshop Administrator (Houghton Workshop)

Reporting to: Houghton Workshop Manager
Key Relationships: Staff and sub-contractors at Houghton Workshop, HQ (Taplow) management team, Other section heads and their admin support team at HQ/Bath
Job Profile: Administrative Support, HR & budget/financial administration, Collating reports and project information, Communication with Houghton team and HQ management, Client Liaison
Location: Houghton Workshop, The Old Coach House, Rear of Home farm,Houghton, Norfolk PE31 6ZD
Hours: 0900-1700 hrs Mon-Fri (There may be occasions when work outside these ours is necessary, for which appropriate TOIL will be given)
Salary: £18,000 – £24,000 subject to experience and qualifications
Benefits: Annual holiday entitlement of 21 days p.a. & public holidays, Personal pension plan, Performance Development Review (PDR) with training plan.

Key Responsibilities:

Administrative Support

  • To support the Houghton Workshop Manager by providing a central administrative function for the staff and sub-contractors at the workshop, collating all enquiries, progress on programme of projects.
  • Main contact for the Workshop and acting as the primary client interface in the workshop.
  • Collate and keep up to date records of project budgets & live financial data & information such that the Workshop Manager and other Project Managers have accurate records to facilitate their report regularly to central accounts department.
  • Assisting with the collating of surveys and treatment reports by the Houghton Workshop staff.
  • To assist in the accurate and timely planning, administration & monitoring of all projects in the Houghton workshop.
  • To keep accurate records on all jobs and projects in the Houghton workshop, providing timely reports and administrative support for weekly briefing with Houghton Section Manager & other key staff at Cliveden Conservation Workshop.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, cohesive team environment at Houghton by operating clear lines of communication and upholding the highest standards of professional conduct across all activities, tasks, and interaction with internal and external clients.

Conservation Projects

  • Act as assistant to Project Managers looking after a portfolio of projects for the Houghton workshop.
  • Contribute to the pre-planning of projects using the agreed templates for project set-up, planning and monitoring.
  • To operate clear lines of communication as the administrative hub for the Workshop.

Materials & Equipment

  • Assist the Houghton Workshop Manager & conservators with the practical storage, ordering and maintenance of materials & equipment.
  • Liaising with the whole team, maintain a tidy and safe workshop environment, operating an entry and exit system for all equipment, including all items on hire.
  • Assist with administration of practical site set-up, ensuring prompt arrival of all materials and work force communicating any issues or changes to Workshop Manager or Conservator Project Manager.

Client facing:

  • Support the Houghton Workshop Manager by liaising with clients and their representatives such as architects, QS, Project Managers and the like to ensure that all are kept up-to-date with project and other conservation work progress.
  • Ensure in all dealings with external clients that the reputation of the company is enhanced and maintained through the highest standards of professional conduct.
  • Maintain confidentiality across the company and within the scope of client-facing communications.

Team Cohesion

  • Work as a central team player, liaising with colleagues at the Houghton Workshop and colleagues across the company, sub-contractors and suppliers, to maintain strong lines of communication.

  • Take responsibility for your own training and development as part of the Performance & Development Review process, drawing up an agreed training plan to suit the responsibilities of the post and to ensure business continuity.
