| The types of materials used
in the construction of a building, affect its behaviour and
performance. Knowledge of the nature and properties of materials
is a pre-requisite for the conservation or repair of such
buildings. We provide the following routine services:
|
|
| · |
Analysis of mortars and plasters towards identifying
the nature and proportions of their ingredients. |
· |
Measurement of porosity of stonework before
and after consolidation. |
· |
Determination of moisture and salt content
of stone, mortars and plasters. |
· |
Measurement
of grading of insoluble aggregate, and identification
of a source of sand with similar colour and particle
size distribution base on data given in the English
Heritage Directory of Sands and Aggregates. |
|
In addition we manage and carry out special monitoring programmes
and investigations such as:
| · |
Checking trial mortar mix composition for QA/QC
purposes. |
| · |
Compressive strengths of mortar mixes. |
| · |
Moisture mapping of surfaces suspect of possible
water ingress to aid in identifying possible location
of the source of water. |
| · |
Estimation of hair loading in historic mortars and
plaster. |
| · |
Identification
of atomic and molecular structure in building materials
using energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDXA), x-ray
diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF). |
